The Custom Campervan with the Coffee Machine

This year, I spent my Easter weekend with the in-laws and their brand new, custom-built campervan. They were eager to show it off, so I got some pictures to share with you guys.

My father-in-law had a dream, you see. A dream that, one day, he could wake up in a campervan and have a proper cup of coffee without having to get out of bed. So committed was he to this dream that the whole campervan was designed around it.

This dream coffee campervan was designed and built locally, in the Auckland workshop of Wendekreisen Travel. Their main business is renting out campervans, but they also manufacture new and innovative models. They sell secondhand campervans, as well as pre-built and luxurious custom-made campervans.

My in-laws’ campervan is a two-berth. Externally, it’s the same size as all Wendekreisen’s LDV two-berths, but it seems a lot bigger on the inside. The bed is permanently set up at the back, with a large storage area underneath it. The table, which hasn’t actually been installed yet, will be at the front. There’s room for it because the driver and passenger seats in the cabin can swivel around.

The toilet/shower cubicle not only has its own hand basin and detachable showerhead, but an actual window to allow for proper ventilation, something missing in many campervans. The fridge is under the bed, which has a ladder to allow access through the van’s rear doors.

The van also has a pull-out awning on its side, a feature not included in the rentals.

Of course, the most important exclusive feature is the coffee machine. It has pride-of-place next to the bed, in its own custom-built drawer.

My father-in-law’s dream has come true.

But how, you may ask, is the coffee machine powered? Well, that’s the finnicky part. When the campervan is plugged in at a powered campsite, all is well, but my father-in-law wanted to be able to use it anywhere. Enter the generator.

This has to be set up outside the night before, but it can be switched on via remote control from inside the campervan. All this so he can enjoy a cup of Nespresso without getting out of bed in the morning!

But, yeah, you can probably see the problem: the peaceful morning birdsong scared away by the gutsy rumble of a generator. I’m worried he’s going to get himself lynched by other campers! Maybe he needs to offer them a coffee too.
